Celebrate the writings of Michigan prisoners and their ongoing resistance to the carceral state.
Michigan Abolition & Prisoner Solidarity (MAPS) is excited to announce the release of the 9th issue of The Opening Statement, a quarterly journal of incarcerated thinkers and writers in Michigan. The Opening Statement is a platform for political thought and consciousness raising in prisons across the state, written by prisoners, edited by MAPS, and distributed for free to over 100 incarcerated subscribers at over half the prisons in Michigan.
In addition to celebrating and distributing the newest issue of the journal, we’ll be hearing firsthand accounts about state repression and prisoner resistance in Michigan. We’ll begin with an account of the September 2016 rebellion at Kinross Correctional Facility, the largest prisoner uprising in Michigan in decades. Following that, we’ll hear from the partner of Terry Brooks, a prisoner still facing charges related to these events.
We’ll end by discussing how you can get involved with MAPS’ efforts to support prisoner struggles. We hope you leave this event with practical methods of connecting with prisoner-writers as well as the broader movement, led by prisoners, against the carceral state.
