The Opening Statement is a quarterly newsletter written for and primarily by incarcerated folks in the Michigan state prison system. Published by MAPS (Michigan Abolition and Prisoner Solidarity) and distributed to approximately 100 subscribers in Michigan prisons, the newsletter seeks to undermine the isolating death sentences imposed on our communities inside and outside of prison walls. Overall, the newsletter sharpens the critical and analytical tools necessary to begin the process of abolition.
